Review: The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

“Look until the leaves turn red, sew the worlds up with thread. If your journey’s left undone, fear the rising of the sun.”
― Melissa Albert, The Hazel Wood

Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother’s stories are set. Alice’s only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”

Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother’s tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.

Okay, so this is a book I had been seeing for months both in the book blogging community and the booktube community. I knew it was something that I needed to get my hands on immediately. I have always been a massive fan of fairytales and so I didn’t need to know anything more about this books than the synopsis. I managed to get my hands on an ARC and the rest, as they say, is history.

I loved that the different characters in this book have such distinct voices and that everything they did was so authentic. I loved the pace of this story. Some may find it a little slow to build but I found that it fitted the story perfectly. Now, can we just talk about the writing for a second? Wow, I loved it. It was so vivid that I could almost see it playing out on the pages. It kept me enthralled for the entirety of the book and left me wanting to re-read it as soon as I finished.

How did I rate it?

Unsurprisingly, I gave The Hazel Wood 5/5 stars. In case you haven’t figured out just how much I love this book, it was one of my favourite books of 2017 (even though it’s not published until the 9th of February) and I have already pre-ordered a finished copy! I cannot wait to see them both side by side.

Peace and pages
