Hello my loves!
Here we are again, Monday. I am always surprised how quickly it comes around. Today’s post is part of a new series on my blog; ___ picks my next read. Each month I will be asking someone new to pick a book for me to read. There are only two rules, it cannot be one that I’ve read (duh) and it has to be one they’ve loved. Any genre is welcome!
For the month of July, I have asked my favourite bookseller to pick one for me. The lovely Emma owns Bookish in Crickhowell. She is mostly responsible for how many books I current own that I haven’t yet had time to read.
So obviously, I had to added another one to the pile….
Emma has picked An Unremarkable Body by Elisa Lodato
When Katharine is found dead at the foot of her stairs, it is the mystery of her life that consumes her daughter, Laura.
The medical examiner’s report, in which precious parts of Katharine’s body are weighed and categorised, motivates Laura to write her own version of events; to bear witness to the unbearable blank space between each itemised entry.
It forces her to confront a new version of the woman she knew only as her mother – a woman silenced by her own mother, and wronged by her husband. A woman who felt shackled by tradition and unable to love freely.
With the heart of a memoir and the pace of a thriller, An Unremarkable Body reveals an overwhelming desire to make sense of an unfulfilled life – and to prove that an unremarkable body does not mean an unremarkable life.
And there we have it! My first pick for my _____ picks my next read series. If you’ll like to follow Emma, which you absolutely should (she’s also one of the Costa judges this year!) you can find her and her lovely bookshop here. I’ll have a new one every month! Keep your eyes peeled for freelance writer, author, publisher, book blogger, friend and booktuber!
Peace and pages
