Blog Tour: Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce

Blood Orange Blog Tour Poster

A couple of months ago, I managed to get my hands of a proof of Blood Orange by Harriet Tyce. I’d seen the cover all over Twitter and the synopsis intrigued me to the point where I begged for a copy. There’s always a risk when you request early copies from publishers. What if you don’t like the book? What if you’re struggling to read it? What if you don’t even manage to drag yourself through the whole thing?! I can tell you know that these issues couldn’t have been further from my mind when reading Blood Orange. I’m so happy to have the first spot today on the blog tour for this wonderful book!

Alison has it all. A doting husband, adorable daughter, and a career on the rise – she’s just been given her first murder case to defend. But all is never as it seems…

Just one more night. Then I’ll end it.

Alison drinks too much. She’s neglecting her family. And she’s having an affair with a colleague whose taste for pushing boundaries may be more than she can handle.

I did it. I killed him. I should be locked up.

Alison’s client doesn’t deny that she stabbed her husband – she wants to plead guilty. And yet something about her story is deeply amiss. Saving this woman may be the first step to Alison saving herself.

I’m watching you. I know what you’re doing.

But someone knows Alison’s secrets. Someone who wants to make her pay for what she’s done, and who won’t stop until she’s lost everything….

My thoughts

Let me begin by saying that for the first 10 or so years of my ‘reading’ life, I read nothing but crime/thrillers. I devoured them whole. Many were good, even more were terrible. For that reason I have come to expect a lot when it comes to this genre. Both with fiction and non-fiction. Not only does the plot have to grip me but the writing has to be exceptional too. Having either or just doesn’t cut it for me anymore, unfortunately. So, you’ve gotten to this point in the post, and I can hear you shouting, “well, what did you think about it?!”. So, let us begin…

Blood Orange has everything that I love in a thriller. It has a storyline that is intriguing, a main character who appears to be morally grey, makes extremely questionable choices and allows herself to be manipulated, even though she holds a position of power in her career. It has a writing style that kept me turning the page over and over again. The secondary storyline running alongside the main one is just as gripping and doesn’t feel at all like it was added to fill space. It was so intriguing actually, I would have happily read a book just about that! Oh, and the legal aspect is spot on (obviously, Harriet knows her shit!)

The ending though. The resolution of the two story lines. HOLY SHIT. During my reading of the book I kept messaging Harriet because I had so many theories and questions and I couldn’t think about anything else whilst at work etc! It blows my mind that this gem is a debut. The story is superb. The writing is superb.

This fantastic book is available wherever they sell (good) books! Get it right now, I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Peace and pages
