Blog Tour: Last Ones Left Alive by Sarah Davis-Groff

Good afternoon my loves!

I hope you’re having a good week so far. I feel like this week has been the longest on record, ever. Maybe even like a month long. Work has been a nightmare and I’m up to my eyeballs in uni work. However, on a much more positive note, I managed to get my hands on an exceptional read and today is my stop on the blog tour for said book; Last Ones Left Alive by Sarah Davis-Groff! **

Raised by her mother and Maeve on Slanbeg, an island off the west coast of Ireland, Orpen has a childhood of love and stories by the fireside. But the stories grow darker, and the training begins. Ireland has been devoured by a ravening menace known as the skrake, and though Slanbeg is safe for now, the women must always be ready to run, or to fight. When Maeve is bitten, Orpen is faced with a dilemma: kill Maeve before her transformation is complete, or try to get help. So Orpen sets off, with Maeve in a wheelbarrow and her dog at her side, in the hope of finding other survivors, and a cure. It is a journey that will test Orpen to her limits, on which she will learn who she really is, who she really loves, and how to imagine a future in a world that ended before she was born.

My Thoughts

Now, if you’d asked me a little while ago. I would have told you that I thought dystopian novels had had their time in the limelight and I’d read enough of them to not need anymore of them in my life. Last Ones Left Alive is on another level all together. Say hello to the first ever Literary Dystopian that I’ve read. This is an exceptional debut novel and I will definitely be picking up the other books Sarah will (hopefully) publish in the future.

The short chapters in this book make for incredibly compulsive reading and I had a hard time putting it down, even when I knew I had an early start the following morning. Brutal, outstanding, superb. I’m actually struggling to come up with the words for this book without using a thesaurus.  The characters all had completely relatable characteristics and I found Orpen to be completely empowering!

This books really touched upon some deeply dark fears that are buried within me. For some reason, I have always had the irrational fear of dying alone, and Last Ones Left Alive terrified me more than it probably would most other people.

All in all this is a fabulous book, equal parts compelling and terrifying. I’ll definitely be recommending this to anyone that will listen. If you’re keen to get your paws on this, fear not, the book hits shelves TOMORROW!
