I hope you’re having a good morning so far! Today’s post is one that’s been coming for a while I think. Having realised that there is basically no way on earth that I’m going to get through all of the unread books I own. So, here’s my plan. Every month I’m going to be doing the Try a Chapter Tag, but a different way. I’ll be reading the first chapter of each of the books below and instead of deciding which one I’d like to read next, I’ll be deciding whether or not to unhaul them. I’ll be donating the books so that hopefully someone else will get to enjoy them. Without further ado, let’s get on with the books!

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Cora is a slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. Life is hell for all the slaves, but especially bad for Cora; an outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is coming into womanhood—where even greater pain awaits. When Caesar, a recent arrival from Virginia, tells her about the Underground Railroad, they decide to take a terrifying risk and escape. Matters do not go as planned—Cora kills a young white boy who tries to capture her. Though they manage to find a station and head north, they are being hunted. When I Hit You by Meena Kandasamy
Seduced by politics and poetry, the unnamed narrator falls in love with a university professor and agrees to be his wife, but what for her is a contract of love is for him a contract of ownership. As he sets about reducing her to his idealised version of a kept woman, bullying her out of her life as an academic and writer in the process, she attempts to push back – a resistance he resolves to break with violence and rape. Smart, fierce and courageous When I Hit You is a dissection of what love meant, means and will come to mean when trust is undermined by violence; a brilliant, throat-tightening feminist discourse on battered faces and bruised male egos; and a scathing portrait of traditional wedlock in modern India.
Frankenstein in Baghdad by Ahmed Saadawi
From the rubble-strewn streets of U.S.-occupied Baghdad, Hadi–a scavenger and an oddball fixture at a local café–collects human body parts and stitches them together to create a corpse.
