Synopsis: When her daughter Beth dies suddenly, Peggy Andrews is left to pick up the pieces and take care of her granddaughter Flo. But sorting through Beth’s things reveals a secret never told: Beth was sick, with the same genetic condition that claimed her father’s life, and now Peggy must decide whether to keep the secret or risk destroying her granddaughter’s world.

Five years later, Flo is engaged and ready to pack up her life and move to New York with her high-flying fiancé. Peggy never told Flo what she discovered, but with Flo looking towards her future, Peggy realises it’s time to come clean and reveal that her granddaughter’s life might also be at risk.

As Flo struggles to decide her own path, she is faced with the same life-altering questions her mother asked herself years before: If a test could decide your future, would you take it?

Overall opinion of the book:
Told through 3 perspectives; Flo, her deceased mothers diaries, and her grandmother Peggy, If You Were Here is one of the most emotionally powerful books I’ve read in a while. An utterly convincing story of a family torn apart by a genetic disease that can break hearts and ruin lives. Peggy has cared for her husband through the dreadful disease that is Huntingtons, a degenerative condition that is as yet incurable. When she also loses her daughter Kate, Peggy finds herself at a crossroads. Doe she tell her granddaughter Flo that there is a chance we will have it too, knowing that this could change her life?

Flo feels like her life is finally starting. She has gotten engaged to her handsome long-term boyfriend and is about to move to New York. The question is, what will happen when Flo finds out this life-changing news? Will her fiance support her? Will she ever be able to forgive her grandmother for withholding this information for so many years?

As with all of my review, I don’t want to spoil it for anyone but really do suggest you get your hands on a copy if you can. Completely and utterly moving, If You Were Here asks the question, what would you do if your future was already decided?

Final thought:
If like me, you really do need a good contemporary fiction in between high fantasy or science fiction, or you are in need of a good cry, I would definitely recommend this one. Although beware of reading in public, strangers might wonder why you’re sobbing uncontrollably.
